    In the eastern Pacific, from Vancouver Island to the coast of South America (rare north of Pt. Conception and not common in Southern California); spans the Pacific to Hawaii and Japan. A schooling fish found commercially both close to shore and at considerable distances from land. Description: See above. Dorsal finlets usually 8, anal finlets. The fact that Japanese and other Asiatic adventurers have frequently landed upon the North Pacific coast of America is a matter of history, and tribal tradition and other evidence indicate that such contact was as frequent in prehistoric times, but whether all this has been sufficient to make permanent impression upon the physique and culture.

    The map depicts the world, including the north Atlantic coast of North America. It includes text in mediaeval Latin and a legend that describes how Leif Eiriksson, a Norseman, found the new land.
